Getting Out of the Box with Modular Homes – Thoughtful, Custom, and Luxurious Design

Building Modular on Tricky Terrain

Is the juice worth the squeeze? That is what many wondered when looking at this tricky lot in Steamboat Springs, CO. The team at SmartPads knew the answer. For that view? Absolutely!

Proving that modular homes can be built on varied terrain, the SmartPads team took the challenge of creating a custom design for this hillside lot that utilizes the space available and maximizes the views of Emerald Mountain and the expansive Yampa Valley.

A New Era of Custom Modular Homes

With this home, SmartPads has entered a new era of their design-build approach. While offering efficient design options for those looking to get their foot in the door of home ownership in mountain towns, SmartPads has expanded into a new level of detail and home design as modular home construction becomes a smart way to build a luxury home in mountain towns. The exterior of this home features sophisticated finishes including Aspen Bark Sandstone dry-stacked rock, clear flat grain cedar siding, and hot rolled steel. The chic interior features Oak floors, solid core Walnut doors, trimless black fiberglass windows, quartz countertops, a chef’s kitchen, and vaulted ceilings.

As a reminder of the level of customization available with a SmartPads home, great thought has been put into every detail in this modular home design. Windows placement was carefully planned to take advantage of the views while creating privacy from nearby homes. To maximize the enjoyment of the views, a garage-style window in the kitchen allows for passing-through food for outdoor dining. A covered deck with a hot tub sits right outside the 6-person steam room and family room with a bar area.

The tight lot and steep hillside behind the home led to one of the most interesting features of the home–the garage. Recognizing that setting the modular living spaces up high would maximize the sweeping views, the team designed a large garage to create a platform for the home. But, like every SmartPads home where every square foot has a purpose, the cavernous garage 1,049 SF garage has 15’9″ ceilings (big enough for a car lift to allow for storage of 2 additional cars). The third parking bay features an oversized 11′ high garage door for sprinter vans, class-B RVs, campers or oversized toy haulers.

Curious to see more? Check out the set day video as the mods were trucked in from our production facility in Vernal, UT. It was a snowy, Steamboat day, and getting the trucks up the tight, winding road to the homesite was a nail-biter. Now we’re putting the finishing touches on the home as the weather shifts into longer, warmer days. We’re excited to see this home come together this spring and will share more details as it is completed.
