A Riddle and a Puzzle in Every Project
At SmartPads, while seeing the final home lived in and being enjoyed is rewarding, the part of building homes that gets our team most excited is the challenge of getting there. Every project is a little like a puzzle: steps, slopes, angles, the unique quirks of a lot and the wishes of the homeowner that make us flex our creativity and problem-solving skills. In our own backyard in Steamboat Springs this past summer we’ve been capturing that process on video.

Off-site and On-site - Parallel Play in Modular Home Building
While the modular homes are currently being built at our Vernal facility, our partners at Crafted Structures are managing construction on-site. This particular home presented a steep, sloping lot with all the complexities that come with it. Rather than seeing the slope as a limitation, our team saw an opportunity: an angled walkout that takes full advantage of the land’s natural contours while maximizing views from this lot that looks down over the valley.
Every Cut, Every Measurement Matters
Watching this project come together has made for much idea sharing and enthusiasm for the options. The drone shots show three stages of construction—site prep, foundation, and assembly—and every decision, every cut, every measurement matters. There’s a rhythm to it: planning, problem-solving, execution. We’re designing a home that fits the land, respects the surroundings, and makes the most of every square foot.
Why Slopes and Angles Are Fun
What’s really fun for our team is the puzzle-solving element. Every lot has its own personality. Some are flat, some are steep, some require creative approaches to drainage, access, or orientation. This is where modular construction shines: we can optimize what we build off-site, then carefully assemble it on-site in a way that works with the land, not against it.
Great Partnerships = Great Builds
Collaboration is another part of what makes these projects rewarding. Working with Crafted Structures, we combine off-site precision with on-site expertise. We talk through every challenge together, plan solutions, and adapt as the site reveals its own quirks. There’s a shared pride in that process—seeing a complicated plan executed cleanly, knowing that the home will sit perfectly on its lot and function exactly as intended.
Sharing the Process with Homeowners
We also love being able to share that process with the people who will live in these homes. Understanding the care, thought, and craft that goes into each project gives homeowners confidence and a connection to the work we do. And for us, that connection feeds our own excitement. Every project is a chance to think creatively, to collaborate with brilliant partners, and to celebrate the satisfaction of a problem well-solved.
Modular Homes Built for the Land
So yes, the site work on this Steamboat Springs project is complicated, and yes, it’s full of puzzles. But that’s exactly why it’s fun for a bunch of construction geeks. For the SmartPads team, that sense of curiosity, creativity, and pride is built into every project, and that is what ultimately results in homes that feel right on the land they occupy.
