While we spend a lot of time sharing info about building a SmartPads home, reflecting on a recent company volunteer day, it struck me that it would be nice to pull back the curtain on the SmartPads team. Katie gave me a recap of the day that I missed, and her enthusiasm was palpable for what it felt like to get the team together and for a really meaningful day. I thought that was worth sharing with you!
A Volunteer Day with the SmartPads Team - by Katie
Recently, our Steamboat crew made the trip over to Vernal for one of our volunteer days. We have a tradition of helping out at the local senior center, so we met up there for the morning. It was straightforward work - landscaping, trimming, and tidying up the yard to brighten the space for the folks who use it.
What made the day really stand out was the energy and attitude everyone brought. This team feels different from other construction teams I’ve worked with. There’s a dynamic energy with this team that is creative and full of fresh ideas. I’ve been enjoying the mix of young professionals and those with a ton of industry experience, along with the diverse life experiences and perspectives of each person at SmartPads. The team’s vibe makes even the most basic chores, in this case pulling weeds and raking leaves, fun and collaborative.
After the work wrapped up, we headed to the park for a BBQ. I was cracking up when one of the guys pulled out a microwave, yes, a microwave, in the middle of the park and rigged up a way to power it just to heat up rice and beans. I shouldn’t have been surprised. We needed warm rice and beans, and the SmartPads team is used to figuring out solutions and making them work, so this was no different.
We finished the afternoon with a “friendly” game of soccer. I did not lace up my cleats, but had a great time watching and laughing at the antics. While the crew might not have brought professional-level skills, there was plenty of heckling and competitiveness along with lots of laughs and energy as the players traded work boots for sneakers.
I’m appreciate working at a place where we can do good work and invest in our communities and their people. And spending this time together gets me more excited about our team, the culture we’re building, and what we can accomplish together. Now back to dreaming of the next cool home we’ll design, figuring out solutions to challenges that are inherently part of construction, and having fun with my co-workers and our clients through it all!
