Time is Our Most Precious Asset
Time is one of the few things we never get back. It shapes our lives in ways big and small—the years spent raising a family, the seasons we get to enjoy in the mountains, the afternoons we’d rather be on a trail or sharing a meal than sitting in another meeting. In the end, time is the most valuable asset any of us has.
That’s why we think about time every time we start a new project. Working with a client to build a home isn’t just walls and windows. With SmartPads, we’re helping people bring their vision of a prefab modern home to life—sooner rather than later, and often with tremendous savings due to a shorter construction loan. For the Stotts Mill home in Basalt, Colorado time was as important as style and function. From shovel in the dirt to certificate of occupancy, it took about six months. Six months to go from a piece of ground to a finished home, ready to welcome its new owners.

How Does Prefab Save Time?
How are we able to build more quickly? The key to the shorter build time is the combination of an efficient process and off-site construction.
Efficient process – Our design library includes a range of options for prefab modern homes, giving homeowners a head start. Clients can select an existing plan or use one as a foundation for customization, making it easy to tailor the design while keeping the project moving forward. Even when we start with a blank canvas, we are able to help clients see their vision come to life easily through our design tools and modular approach. From there, our process walks people through design refinements and finish selections in a straightforward, step-by-step way. Because decisions are made up front, the project keeps moving forward without unnecessary delays.
Off-site construction – The real time-saver is the off-site construction. While the site crew is busy with dirt work and the foundation, our team is simultaneously building the home modules inside a controlled facility. Multiple modules can be worked on at the same time, with specialists focusing on different elements—one module getting windows installed while another gets electrical. Weather delays aren’t a factor, and our on-site crew is ready to set and finish the home as soon as the modules arrive. This layering of work streams is what makes the timeline so much shorter compared to a traditional build.
Embracing Each Home's Unique Design
Every home we build has different requirements, and not every home can be built on such a tight timeline. The Stotts Mill home had some extra intricacies with the strictest HOA requirements we’ve seen—height restrictions, roof pitches, neighborhood aesthetic rules. That kind of complexity can slow projects down, but we were able to address all of them in the design process, so the modules were already in the works while the site was prepped. By the time the foundations were ready, the house was too.

Can Cost Efficient = Quality?
Of course, quick doesn’t mean cutting corners. The SmartPads process is set up to streamline the build cycle and maximize efficiencies. We’re not skipping steps or moving too quickly, we’re simply layering elements of the process on top of each other so multiple steps are happening at the same time. The result is a well-built, beautiful home that is engineered for high altitude living and with all the hallmarks of the modern prefab homes.
This home includes vaulted ceilings in the living room, an office above the carport, a cozy wood-burning stove, and luxury touches like a butler’s pantry and soaking tub. Windows were placed to let in natural light while keeping privacy intact. And it all fits seamlessly within the HOA’s vision for the neighborhood.

Breaking the Mold While Building Custom Homes
Building in the mountains often comes with a reputation: long timelines, endless delays, and blown budgets. We’re proving it doesn’t have to be that way. With SmartPads, homeowners can focus on the life they want to start in their new home rather than the grind of construction.
Time is money, especially with construction loans. But it’s also so much more. It’s the chance to move in before another winter passes, to begin family traditions in a new kitchen, to watch the sunset from your deck instead of watching the calendar. At SmartPads we pride ourselves in not just delivering a well-built home, but the one thing that matters most—time. Curious to learn more and get started on building your modern prefab home?
