If you’ve reached out about building a home with SmartPads, you most likely have been in communication with Katie Stassen, our Sales and Operations Manager. She’s not one to seek the spotlight, but it was time for us to shine it on her anyway! Based in our Steamboat Springs headquarters, Katie has the ability to fit more into a day than anyone we know, which serves her well as she manages the home building process for all our clients from their first inquiry to move in day.
Meet Katie
I grew up in Munster, Indiana, attended Purdue University, and moved to Seattle in 2004 with my husband—we’ve actually known each other since kindergarten. In 2009, we came to Steamboat for a one-year house swap to be ski bums and never left.
Q: How do you like to spend your weekends?
I am really into yoga (I completed a 200-hour teacher training not to be a teacher but just to learn more), hiking in Steamboat, or hanging out with my dog, Gus. I also enjoy mushroom hunting, but I’m not going to share my secret spots!
Q: What is your favorite place to eat out in Steamboat?
I’m a regular at Meat Bar. I go there at least twice a week, whether it’s for a nice dinner with my husband or happy hour with my friend Cat. It’s my top spot in Steamboat.

Q: What part of your job is the most fun?
The best parts of my job are Set Day and the homeowner walkthroughs. The walkthrough is a great moment to see the client’s excitement and celebrate progress before we move to the next phase. Set Day is when everything comes together, and it’s exciting and a relief at the same time.
Q: How do you bring value to SmartPads customers?
I have a degree in Construction Management from Purdue University and years of experience in the field. I started out estimating precast concrete, then moved to building mid-rise and high-rise projects in Seattle before transitioning to residential construction in Steamboat. This background helps me understand the hurdles the client has to go through and act as an interpreter of sorts as I guide clients through the technical aspects and language. My background also allows me to foresee potential issues and hopefully address them up front.
Q: What do you feel has the biggest impact on the look and feel of a home?
Tile. It’s where you can really bring personality to a project. Flooring and countertops should be timeless, but tile is the place to have fun and add some pizazz.
Q: Speaking to your construction management background. What makes the SmartPads process interesting for you?
I like that SmartPads is different from traditional construction. The industry has been stuck in its ways for too long, and it’s time to innovate. SmartPads focuses on alternative construction methods that are efficient and forward-thinking. It’s not just about sustainability but also exploring new approaches.
Q: What advice would help potential SmartPads homeowners as they begin the process?
Ask questions. If there’s something you don’t understand, talk to me or your general contractor. Those conversations often clear up misunderstandings and help everyone stay on the same page.
